Nancy and Hardy Spencer wanted to transform their family's home office from a catch-all space that lacked organization and storage, into a warm congenial place with everything at arm's reach. They also wanted to update the powder bath in the foyer of the home.

After looking at several home office systems (and each being either too boring or too institutional), we decided that I was to design a clean and functional built in system that would lean towards traditional-with a flair of whimsy. I designed several cabinet units that would go from floor to ceiling, to accommodate storage and display. Then I had the base and crown moldings installed around them to achieve a tailored, custom look. I also designed a generous seven-foot oval desk top where several people could work at the same time.

Part of my original drawing for the oval work station included a custom-turned leg that reminded me a bit of the "Stay-Puff Marshmallow Man." The name stuck and Nancy and I refined its marshmallow form to its present spherical shape. We also created an upholstered wainscot that has a layer of cork underneath. It's not only decorative but also serves as a bulletin board for notes, documents and children's artwork.

In the redesigned powder bathroom, we decided to incorporate the existing lavatory and toilet into the existing space, and add custom gold and charcoal-grey, Byzantine style, tile for the floor and a pair of Boyd wall sconces flanking the new bathroom mirror.
